About
Who am I? A bit of all sorts really…
I’m a self-confessed geek who lived and breathed videogames through most of my youth. I had the typical geek dream of becoming some famous developer like Peter Monyleux or Sid Meier, making millions and retiring to some Mediterranean beachfront palace surrounded by the finest technology money could buy. Needless to say, I’m still working on it.
I’m a volunteer admin over at Wikipedia, mainly focusing on videogame articles. This can include cleaning them up and sourcing them to make sure that everything they describe can be verified, or writing new ones from scratch about unreleased titles or concepts that have hit the media. I also do a bit of behind-the-scenes work to keep the project ticking over smoothly.
I’m an engineer and coder who likes nothing more than to pull things apart to see how they work or creating something from scratch from a box of random items. I don’t get much chance to tinker with things these days, my “coalface” skills becoming a bit dulled over time.
I’m a designer and analyst for large-scale IT systems, particularly when looking at implementing new systems and hooking them up to what’s there, or how to get more value and use out of what’s already in place.
I’m an amateur researcher of sorts in online communities: how to build them, how to promote them and get people using them, how to get people to come back time and again, and how to encourage people to generate and share content. It’s come from a number of community projects that I’ve worked on in the past, helping to provide an online presence for people who may only be linked by a common interest or hobby.
So you see, bit of a hodge-podge really…
